For businesses that have taken their business models beyond the capabilities of the Shopify platform, such as a multi-theme’d, multi-currency – the endeavour to transfer to a platform like Magento that can deliver that experience will be a challenge. The challenge is not to send over your data, the difficulty is retaining the data structure and converting it within Magento. If it is unstructured, then you will have a data-set that will not be usable within that environment. As an example one of the key areas are products. One has to link “Configurable Products” to “Simple Products” in Magento whereas in Shopify the relationship structure is between “Products” and “Variants”. Exports and Transfer tools can export your products, however, most will take that structure and make all products “Simple Products” – thus losing the structure and relationship between its Shopify “Product” and “Variants”. This makes managing products very difficult which in most cases it takes one to re-import and restructure their products from scratch.
Data structures in Magento are more complex when it comes to an order being transferred. One needs to create a quote, an invoice and then have an order pick up the products in the correct structure so as to properly transfer the order over. In essence – it is a simulated transaction to create the Order record. It is not as simple as copying database tables over, or an export/import to move your store.
With the business challenges of a live and thriving client base, it is critical to maintain that momentum and not let your transition get in the way. Having the right tool to deliver this transition is important to ensure that your data is transformed to its new home so as to focus on moving the business forward.
